Mighty Jackie: The Strike-out Queen
by Marissa Moss

People often say that girls can't play ball, but
it's just not true!  Jackie Mitchell once played
baseball with the minor league Chattanooga
Lookouts.  In an exhibition game against the
mighty New York Yankees, she struck out both
Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig!  Read all about it
in this picture book by Marissa Moss.

Salt in His Shoes
by Deloris Jordan and Roslyn M.

If you ever saw Michael Jordan play professional
basketball, you might believe he was born playing
the game he was so awesome.  That's not the case,
however.  Michael once struggled.  In this story,
Michael's mother tells how he practiced and
persevered and became the greatest basketball
player ever.  Recommended by Rachel and Sarah.
Novels
Finding Buck McHenry
by Alfred Slote
I play softball, but there aren't too many good
books out about softball.  You have to make do
with books about baseball, which is OK since I
like baseball a lot, too.  This is one of my favorite
baseball stories.

Jason collects baseball cards.  In fact, he is
better at collecting baseball cards than he is at
playing baseball, and he gets cut from his team.
He will have to play for the new little league team, which doesn't
even have a coach.  Jason thinks he might know someone to coach
the team though.  Mack Henry, the school custodian, knows
bunches about baseball.  In fact, he knows so much that Jason
thinks he might be Buck McHenry who used to play for the old Negro
baseball Leagues!  Is he or isn't he?  That is what everyone wants
to know, and that is when Jason's troubles begin.

This is a great baseball story for both boys and girls.  Girls play on
Jason's team and some of them are better than the boys. You know,
I know some girls like that ;-). Recommended by Rachel.
Honus and Me
by Dan Gutman

Have you ever wished you could travel back in time to
meet famous people or just to see what it was like to
live back then?  I have.  In this book, Joe Stoshack
finds out something strange happens when he
touches old baseball cards.  He is able to travel back
in time and meet that baseball player.  In this book, he
travels back to meet Honus Wagner, possibly the
greatest shortstop of all time.  This book is a
combination of a sports story, historical fiction and
fantasy all rolled up into one great fun read.  If you
like it, be sure to read the sequels --
Jackie and Me,
Babe and Me, Shoeless Joe and Me, and Mickey
and Me
.   Recommended by Rachel.
