Super Science Sleuth Program
Investigating Science Through Reading


The Super Science Sleuth Program encourages students to investigate science through reading. By reading quality non-fiction trade books and carefully selected science-based fiction, students:

1. Learn more about science.

2. Gain experience in reading non-fiction text.

3. Gain exposure to different text organizations.

4. Increase vocabulary knowledge by reading texts loaded with subject specific vocabulary.

5. Improve reading comprehension and critical thinking skills.

The Super Science Sleuth program is a cooperative program between the New Hope Library and New Hope's Science Program and encourages students to explore the wonderful non-fiction trade books available today. By reading science based fictional stories and science related non-fiction from the Super Science Sleuth Book List, students can become a Super Science Sleuth. Students who meet the minimum standards will earn extra credit points on their test average grade while earning points toward their quarterly Accelerated Reader goals.


Super Science Sleuth Certification Levels and Requirements


graphic of science book Apprentice Level -- For the quarter, accumulate at least 3 Accelerated Reader Points by reading a minimum of 3 books (2 of which must be non-fiction books) from the Super Science Sleuth book list. Fictional books must be within the book level range set for students by their reading teacher. # Non-fiction books may be up to 1 level below the book level range set by the reading teacher. Accelerated Reader quizzes taken on the books read must be passed with a score of 80% or better to count towards Super Science Sleuth certification. Apprentice certification adds 5 points to the student's test average grade for the quarter.



graphic picture of magnifying glass Journeyman Level -- For the quarter, accumulate at least 4 Accelerated Reader Points by reading a minimum of 4 books (3 of which must be non-fiction books) from the Super Science Sleuth book list. Fictional books must be within the book level range set for the student by their reading teacher. # Non-fiction books may be up to 1 level below the book level range set by the reading teacher. Accelerated Reader quizzes taken on the books read must be passed with a score of 80% or better to count towards Super Science Sleuth certification. Journeyman certification adds 7 points to the student's test average grade for the quarter.



Professional Level -- Students who earn a Super Science Sleuth Certification for each quarter, will be recognized as a Professional Super Science Sleuth at New Hope's Year End Award"s Day Program.



# Non-fiction books are often more difficult to read than fiction books for a variety of reasons -- unusual vocabulary, unfamiliarity with factual material, organizational differences. For this reason, students may read non-fiction books at lower book levels than would be acceptable for fictional books.
