A Letter From Kimberly Brubaker Bradley
Dear Rachel,

I just got finished looking at your website and I was really impressed with
all the things you've done.  Thank you for recommending One-of-a-Kind
Mallie; I was glad you liked it.  Thank you, too, for giving me an author
page! I was honored to be included.

I don't have my own website, but I'm thinking about getting one.  I'll let
you know if I do.  The Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators
used to sponsor author pages and I had one then, but they didn't keep
up the URL and some other company bought it.

I was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, in 1967.  I based Ruthie's Gift and
One-of-a-Kind Mallie on stories my grand-mother told me about her life
growing up in Cedarville, a much smaller town near Fort Wayne.  I knew
all my grandmother's brothers except Joe, who died before I was born,
and I was very close to my great-uncle Paul.  They are all dead now,
even my grandmother, but she did get to read both books.

I have a brother who is an attorney and lives in Indianapolis.  I also have
a sister who is still in high school.  I went to Smith College and got a
degree in Chemistry, which I love but not quite as much as writing, and I
worked as a chemist for the first years of my marriage.  I quit chemistry to
write in 1993.  My son Matthew was born at the end of 1994, and my
daughter Katie at the beginning of 1998.  We have 2 horses, a pony, and
a dog, and we're going to move out to a farm in a few weeks.  We've
owned the land for 3 years and we've been building the house, so we're
very excited about that.

I have always loved to read and my parents always read, too.  My favorite
books when I was your age were the Little House on the Prairie books.  I
also loved any horse book I could find, and I love biographies.  My
favorite authors now are Jane Austen (who wrote in the late 1700s and
early 1800s), Patrick O'Brien, Dick Francis, and Anne Lamott for adult
fiction, and Patricia MacLachlan, Robin McKinley, Lois Lowery -- most of
the time, and Cynthia Voight for children's books.  I still read all the time,
usually 3 or 4 books a week.

Hope that helps.

A Note from Mrs. Bradley about her new book! Halfway to the Sky!
Dear Rachel,

I thought you might be interested to hear that I had
another book out.  This one is called Halfway to the
Sky, and it's set on the Appalachian Trail in modern
times.  I can't remember how old you are, but I think
this book will be best enjoyed by kids age 10 and up
-- it's for a slightly older audience than Ruthie's Gift.
I still enjoy checking out your website to see what you're reading now.

Yours truly,
Kimberly Brubaker Bradley
Ruthie's Gift
by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley

Ruthie is lonely.  She has five brothers, but she
longs for a sister.  Maybe the new baby will be
the sister Ruthie wants so badly.  At school,
Ruthie is the only student in the third grade.  The
year is 1916, and Ruthie's life is about to
drastically change.  Does she get a baby sister?
You will love Ruthie and her family.

One-of-a-Kind Mallie  (a sequel to Ruthie's Gift)
by KImberly Brubaker Bradley

Have you ever wanted to be an identical twin?  I
have.  I think it would be really neat to have
someone who is just like me.  Or would they be just
like me?  Would I really like people to think I was
just like someone else?  Would I feel like a very
special kid?  Mallie has an identical twin, Hallie,
and Mallie is tired of people thinking she and Hallie
are just alike.  Mallie wants people to know she is
Mallie.  Find out what happens when she tries to
show everyone she is Mallie and not just the
second half of Hallie and Mallie in One-of-a-Kind
Mallie.  Recommended by Rachel
Weaver's Daughter
by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley

Lizzy Baker lives in the mountains of Tennessee
back when Tennessee was part of the southwest
territories.  Each fall, Lizzy gets very sick.  In
those days, the doctors did not know what was
wrong with her, but today she would have
allergies and asthma.  I have allergies like Lizzy.
I am glad I have medicines to take care of them,
but Lizzy didn't have those medicines.  Lizzy's
family must find some way to help Lizzy or she will
die from her illness one fall.  Whatever will Lizzy
do?  Read Weaver's Daughter and find out.

For Freedom: The Story of a French Spy
by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley

The time is World War II and the Nazis have
invaded France, but the French people were not
conquered.  The French Resistance is one of the
most fascinating stories of that awful war.  In this
book, based on a true story, readers experience
this courageous story through a teenage girl who
becomes a spy for the Resistance Movement.
If you like stories that you can't put down, be sure to read this book by
one of my favorite authors, Kimberly Brubaker Bradley!
