Half Magic by Edward Eager
Have you ever wanted to go on a magical adventure? I have, and so did Jane, Mark, Kathrine and Martha in Edward Eager's great book Half Magic. They find a magic coin which will grant their wishes, but there is a slight problem -- the coin will only grant half of their wish! The

fun and adventure really begins when they finally figure out how to use the coin -- or think they have it figured out. They find out they should make sure they know what they are wishing for! This book is so much fun! And the kids' magical adventures are just beginning. The sequel to this book is called Magic by the Lake -- find out what it is like to have magic by the lake full! Recommended by Rachel.
Abi, age 11 agrees. She writes:
"I read Half Magic when I was in the fourth grade and I loved it. So I read it again this year. I liked the part where there was a fire; it was funny.
Half Magic is also available in an unabridged audio tape. It makes a great story to listen to on a long trip.

Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine
This is the story of Cinderella with a twist. When Ella was born a fairly gave her an unique gift -- the gift of obedience. The gift turned out to be more of a curse, however. You won't be able to put this book down until Ella's fate has been decided. Recommended by Rachel

Ella Enchanted was made into a movie that is now available on VHS and DVD. The movie features some great music and is loads of fun, but it is a bit different from the book. Read the book and then watch the movie. See which you like better.

The Princess Test by Gail Carson Levine
Gail Carson Levine retells the story of "The Princess and the Pea" in this funny book. Lorelei has always been difficult to please. She cried and cried as a baby. When she was older, she didn't cry so much, but she was sick a lot of the time. Her father and mother did all they could for her, but it was no use. Lorelei could not do anything without crying, or getting hurt or sick. Then one day a wet and miserable Lorelei stumbles into a strange castle. At the castle the King and Queen are holding a princess test trying to find a bride for their son, who only wants to marry a girl he loves. Somehow, Lorelei finds herself in the middle of the Princess test! Can she pass it? Will the Prince fall in love with her? Read the book and find out. Recommended by Rachel.
This book is one of the Princess Tales series. Other books in the series are Princess Sonora and the Long Sleep, Cinderellis and the Glass Hill, The Fairy's Mistake, The Fairy's Return and For Biddle's Sake. I liked them all!

Fantastic Mr. Fox by Roald Dahl
If you like fairy tales or fantasy, you are sure to like Fantastic Mr. Fox by Roald Dahl. Unlike most fairy tales where the fox is the bad guy, Mr. Fox is the hero of this story. Three villanous farmers by the names of Bean, Boggis and Bunce are out to shoot, starve or just kill Mr. Fox by any means. Mr. Fox, however, had other plans! This is one of my very favorite books.
