The Story of Ruby Bridges
by Robert Coles
Kids make history, too!  Ruby Bridges
was just 6 years old when she became
one of four girls chosen to integrate New
Orleans, Louisiana public schools.  Ruby
had to deal with racial prejudice and
hatred while still proving that she was
smart enough to attend a school that
used to be just for white students.  Ruby
Bridges is one of our heroes.   Read this
great picture book and she is sure to be
one of your heroes, too.  Recommended
by Rachel and Sarah.
Note:  Ruby Bridges wrote a memoir of her
experiences as a six-year-old in a slightly longer book
for intermediate and middle school students called
Through My Eyes.

Disney also made a great movie adaptation of this
book.  The movie is available in both VHS and DVD
formats.

Bud, Not Buddy
by Christopher Paul Curtis
Hello! My name is Miracle and I have a book for
you!
Bud, Not Buddy is about a 10 year-old boy
named Bud Caldwell.  Bud lives in a home because
his mom died when he was 6 years old.  He
experiences great things like hopping on a freight
train with his friend, Bugs. He also experiences
some bad times, like having to go live with the
Amoses who treat him badly and put him in the
shed outside.  He becomes a part of a family for just
breakfast once.  Along the way, Bud finally finds his
"father" and ... well, I can't tell you the rest,  You'll
have to read this great story for yourself.
