The Watsons Go to Birmingham, 1963
by Christopher Paul Curtis

This Newbery Honor novel is both very funny and very
sad.  When the Watsons leave Michigan to visit
relatives in Birmingham, they never dream that the
problems they thought were so bad will seem
insignificant when tragedy strikes a church they
attend while there.  Based upon actual events that
took place in Birmingham, 1963, this book makes you
realize that horrible things can happen to nice people
and life must go on even through tragedy.
